Artist's Comments

Here is my Black Pearl amaryllis that he requested a picture of. I edited it somewhat to reduce the glare produced by the window right next to it. However, I tried to match the appearance of what it should look like as closely as possible.

Makes me think of a Miltonia orchid.

Amaryllis are one of my favorite tropicals. They are easy to take care of and they are long lived, not to mention that they produce very showy flowers. Amaryllis come from South and Central America. They are of the Hippeastrum genus which is a bulb plant. Amaryllis bulbs resemble massive onions. When they bloom, they produce flowers in sets of four on a long stalk. Unlike many plants, amaryllis will bloom first and then produce leaves. Some cultivars of amaryllis have flowers with double petals but I like the single flowers better as the double-flowered blooms often look "crowded".

You can find amaryllis bulbs at bargain prices in many department stores, but some of the more elaborate varieties can be very expensive indeed. It is not unusual to pay $40-$60 for a single bulb of an especially prized cultivar.

I bought both Black Pearl and Prelude from Van Bourgondien

They are out of stock for now but amaryllis bulbs are usually sold in the fall.
